FROM THE PASTOR:
Dear Spirit of Truth Family;
In a recent Sunday text we read these words of Jesus: “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”
Jesus spoke these words on the eve of his arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane having concluded his final meal with his disciples. The laying down of one’s life is fresh in Jesus’ mind as he is about to do just that for the sins of the entire world. As Jesus prepares the disciples for his own departure, he knows that they will only survive their new calling to be Apostles if they learn to love one another to the point of sacrificing for each other. Jesus will not however leave these disciples to flounder on their own, but promises to send the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth who will “guide them into all truth.”
The Holy Spirit did indeed come upon the disciples with great power and with visible signs, on the annual feast of Pentecost. That same Holy Spirit continues in the words of Martin Luther, to “call, gather, enlighten, and sanctify the whole Christian church on Earth.” On May 20, we will celebrate this great Day of Pentecost to commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit to give birth to the Christian church. It is a day to celebrate and thank God for His daily provision, and for the gift of faith that the Spirit has worked in us. We cannot believe in Jesus Christ or come to him without the work of the Holy Spirit within us. This gift of the Spirit’s presence in our lives is immeasurable. God grant our congregation the continued presence and power of the Holy Spirit to call us to faith, gather us as His people, enlighten us with the truth of His Word, and to sanctify or, make holy (set apart) his people in the one true faith.
Pentecost blessings to you all,
